Omega-3 fatty acids are my favorite kind of dietary fat, because research shows they’re good for heart, eye, and brain health. Seafood is one of the richest sources of this good-for-you fat, but other foods and dietary supplements can also boost your intake. Adam Ismail, executive director of the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s (GOED) joins me on the show this week to explain the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, how many milligrams you should aim to consume each day, the various ways to add them to your family’s diet, and so much more!

The goal of GOED is to “increase consumption of omega-3s to adequate levels around the world and to ensure that the industry is producing quality omega-3 products that consumers can trust.” Adam shares that vision on the show, and he answers questions about farm raised versus wild, supplements, and research on inflammatory bowel disease. And together, we dish about our favorite salmon recipes as well as my latest for Teriyaki Salmon, Snow Pea, and Carrot Packets.
Show Highlights:
- Adam shares a little about himself and why he loves travel, his family, and nutrition.
- What is GOED and how it’s helping consumers understand the power of DHA and EPA omega-3 fats.

My favorite salmon recipe is a blackened salmon with blue cheese sauce. I now have a toddler so I am planning to try your Asian salmon sticks for her soon.
Oh yum. And also give my new Teriyaki Salmon, Snow Peas, and Carrot Packets a try! The new recipe just hit the blog this week 🙂
We love to cook Salmon with cajun spices!
I love to bake salmon with a little bit of olive oil, sliced onions and dill sprinkled on top. Simple: but oh so delicious! I usually serve it with brown rice and lemon as well. If you don’t eat it all in one sitting, you can use leftovers in salmon tacos.
As for adding Omega 3’s to my family’s diet, it may not be the best source of Omega 3, but we love to snack on sliced avocado and crackers. (or in the case of my baby, puréed avocado) I also add a scoop of chia seed to all of our fruit/spinach smoothies.
I was very happy to hear that cod contains Omega-3’s, even though it is lower than salmon. We love salmon, but have cod several times a week since it is more affordable. We just vary the spices we put on it. Thank you for the very interesting and informative show! I had to go back and listen a second time to take notes! 🙂
I have a great easy recipe for Honey Salmon in Foil that is baked in the oven. I need to make it more often!
So just honey and salmon? Tell me more!
Salmon, or as it’s known in our house, pink fish, is usually just cooked in butter. But I’m hoping I can convince the kids to branch out to some new flavors someday.
Pink fish. Love it!
My family loves grilled salmon with a garlic teriyaki sauce. It is my son’s favorite meal and he is a super picky eater. I’m actually afraid to prepare it any other way since he loves it so much! It would be great to win the salmon sampler and Good Fish cookbook so that I can try out some new recipes. Thanks so much!
I love blackened salmon with a salad with baby kale and roasted Brussels sprouts. I recreated it from a restaurant
My husband and I recently started making chimichurri salmon. I also love salmon on a plank with a little butter and lemon. I look forward to trying your recipes!
-Julia
Our family loves to make salmon tacos. I found a Seafood seasoning made by red lobster that has no sugar. I season the salmon with that and grill or bake it. We use slaw, cilantro, mango salsa and Greek yogurt to top our tacos.
My husband has a Big Green Egg and we love to grill all year round. Salmon is almost always on the menu weekly. A simple way to prepare is using the Potlatch Seasoning from Williams Sonoma. The kids love it (even if they do eat it with a little ketchup). Lol!
Thanks for your awesome podcast and website, Liz. I’ve been following you for years and am so thankful for your show and recipes. 🙂
Alison, thanks for your kind words. I’m so happy you’ve been w/ me for all these years! I’ve been dreaming about a Big Green Egg. So, you love it?!
I’ve never actually had salmon, but after listening to this episode I can’t wait to give it a try. Fingers crossed…and toes too. 😉
OK. You MUST try salmon. It’s my favorite. Please let me know when you try it!!
I love salmon grilled and on top of a big caesar salad
Me too!
I love salmon grilled with honey on top.
I adore salmon. My favorite recipe would just be salmon grilled in a foil pack with olive oil and some dill. Simple and delicious.
I love fish of all kinds including salmon poached without anything but either fresh chopped tomatoes or canned no sodium diced tomatoes. The moisture from the tomatoes poaches the fish and creates a beautiful sauce to put over rice or other grain. Add a little fresh basil or parsley (or other herbs that tickle your fancy) and it is a delicious meal everyone in my family likes.
Now I’m hungry!!
It is yummy and healthy — the dynamic duo of eating! Thanks Liz!
Baked garlic butter Salmon
Salmon is always great with simple marinades so either pure maple syrup or soy sauce/brown sugar marinade. I do tend to like salmon more sweet than savory.
Salmon slathered with some homemade mayo and then sprinkled wth fresh dill and baked in the oven. Yum!
I also take fish oil supplement pills to make sure I am getting all those heart healthy benefits! 1000mg/day
We like salmon grilled or pan fried with blackened seasoning, Serve with a large salad.
I love using smoked salmon on a simple pizza. Homemade white whole wheat crust, cream cheese with dill and salmon.
My favorite salmon recipe is just baking it with maple syrup, whole grain or Dijon mustard and garlic mixed together and poured on top prior to baking. I get omega 3 into our diet by adding tuna or salmon to salads, sandwiches and pastas.
I love the sound of that recipe!
Salmon is awesome! I love to marinade it with a little maple syrup, teriyaki and ginger. Bake at a high temperature and it is delicious!
Just easy – baked with salt and pepper!
We love the salmon with Cajun spice recipe that my husband makes! We try eating some form of fish twice a week- your corny salmon cakes are a favorite of mine!
Miso Salmon!
My dad supplies me with salmon from his fishing trips to BC, Canada. We especially love the Mom’s Walnut- Crusted Salmon.
I’ve found a lovely frozen wild caught salmon that has a great spicy marinade. I grill or bake my fillet using a temperate probe to make sure I don’t overcook it.
We love salmon in our house, and need to remember to eat more of it! Our favorite recipe is salmon grilled on a cedar plank with a smear of whole grain mustard and maple syrup on top! Getting ready to introduce salmon to our 8 month old so she can reap those DHA benefits!
We love salmon with orange marmalade and soy sauce, sweet and salty its perfect.
Liz, what a great post and recipe! My favorite way to fix my salmon is blackened on the grill or cast iron skillet. I love that crunchy, spicy texture on the top!
Sounds great to me!
My husband and one daughter do not like salmon but they will eat salmon cakes. My other daughter and I love salmon. I’ll have to give your Asian Salmon Sticks a try!
Well, if they eat salmon cakes, that’s a great option! yes, try the salmon sticks 🙂
My favorite way to enjoy salmon is on the grill with a fresh kiwi and mango salsa on top.
Grilled Salmon is the best!! I like to experiment with different herbs and spices to give each meal a different twist!
We like grilled salmon on a cedar plank seasoned with salt, pepper and lemon.
I love simple grilled salmon with a fresh salad.
I like teriyaki salmon with rice and green beans.
I love grilled salmon on a cedar plank–yum!!
Great information and interesting guest on this very important topic!
I like my salmon baked in the oven with olive oil, diced tomatoes, kalamata olives and capers. My way to get omega-3’s is I like to add walnuts to my meals, in salads or in my steel cut oats in the morning!
Salmon Tagliatelle is always a winner in my family!
And great since it’s quick and easy to make!
I would love to win the sample and cookbook for my dad since he’s the biggest salmon lover I know 🙂
A bigger salmon lover than me?! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by.
I cook it over water on the top of the stove on a Burton Grill. Less smell in the house and so tender. Top it with Littlefield Bee Farm honey mustard from Block Island.
