Our UK family came to visit last week, and we all spent a magical week at our new home on Nantucket playing at the beach, cooking summer-inspired dishes, fishing, golfing, and just hanging out. The island is famous for a lot of things including Nantucket Reds, which my husband, brother-in-law, and son all wore as they strolled down Main Street one day. Talk about preppy!
Murray’s Toggery Shop sells a variety of clothing including these Nantucket Reds shorts, which my brother-in-law, Dick, bought to get into the island spirit!
Knowing how much I love to cook, Dick brought along this chef’s hat, and my adorable niece Daisy wore it proudly as she helped me cook all week …
… including these Double Chocolate Zucchini Cupcakes from my friend Katie over at Mom’s Kitchen Handbook. We used zucchini from Bartlett’s Farm for some “local” flavor.
Dick and Karen treated us to a spectacular dinner one night (and yes, Dick looked more “pirate” than “chef”) …
… featuring Cod Cakes in Tomato Sauce from Jerusalem by Yotam Ottolenghi, roasted vegetables from Bartlett’s Farm, and a couscous recipe that Karen tossed together which I must, must, must recreate for all of you soon!
Our family likes to keep busy, but downtime was a must, so Simon played a lot of board games with the kids. My nephew, Stan, was an awesome first mate at Battleship!
In Liz’s Healthy Table, I brought along a few recipes from my blog including roasted beets and Wild Rice Summer Salad. (I used 10-minute farro from Trader Joe’s vs. wild rice.)
Did I mention that the boys went fishing A LOT? Josh caught a bluefish off Great Point, but thankfully he threw it back in. It’s all about the chase!
We miss our UK family so much and look forward to British Invasion 2015 next summer!
Simon holds hands with Daisy and Stan at Smith Point in Madaket. We never tire of the light on this beach.
When you leave Nantucket on the ferry, you should always toss a penny overboard as you round Brandt Point. It’s good luck!
